Prynne's first attack on the Arminian doctrine of free will as opposed to Calvinistic predestination, written in response of John Cosin's Collection of Private Devotions (1627) which he claimed "was riddled with popery, and condemned in particular its endorsement of prayers for the dead... the proliferation of martyrs and saints' days, and the emphasis placed on the power of priestly absolution" (ODNB).
