Autograph letter signed by J. Wallace, to the Dean of Windsor, headed "1/2 past 7 Oclock", communicating "he intelligence just brought me by a Messenger from London of the Splendid Victory Obtained by the Allies" ("...The Officer arrived in the Course of the night with the despatches which will be published in the gazette as early as possible – My Note says nothing could be more desperate than the contest & Nothing more compleat than the Victory – 210 peices of Cannon taken Eagles Colours – the Whole personal Baggage of Bonaparte & even his own Carriage – The French army totally annihilated – Where Bpt is it not known – there is nothing said of Prisoners & I believe no regular return of the killed & wounded – but it is known Picton has fallen..."), and giving details as far as known of casualties; address panel ("The Revd/ The Dean of Windsor/ JWallace"), docketed "1815/ Mr Wallace/ Waterloo", 3 pages, trace of seal, formerly bound, 4to, [Windsor, 7.30 am, 22 June 1815]

Footnotes

Major the Hon Henry Percy, the only one of Wellington's ADCs not to be killed or wounded in the battle, arrived in London with the Waterloo despatch at about ten in the evening of 21 June. The writer of the present letter was possibly General John Alexander Douglas Agnew Wallace (later styling himself Sir John Wallace of Craigie) who had fought in the Peninsula and who was to return to France with a brigade later that year (see ODNB). The Dean of Windsor was Edward Legge, later Bishop of Oxford and Warden of All Souls.
