SUFFOLK

"A Survey of an Estate in Stonham Aspell belonging to the Revd C. Jeaffreson, 1784/ Survey'd in 1784 by J. Spurling Jr", the title in pen-and-wash within a handsome rococo cartouche, with the Table of Contents similarly displayed, with scale of perches and compass rose, with the house and fields outlines in coloured washes, on one skin of vellum, some dust-staining on reverse where folded for filing but the map itself in bright, fresh condition, map frame c.425 x 565mm., Suffolk, 1784

John Spurling the Younger, surveyor of this attractive plan of an estate at Stonham Aspal, near Stowmarket, worked from Grundisburgh, north east of Ipswich [Bendall S428]. All his work is recorded as being of Suffolk and dating, until the discovery of the present plan, between 1775 and 1777; with four examples in the Suffolk Record Office (two at Ipswich and two at Lowestoft) and one in the British Library. Included in the lot is a plan of the Pilmoor Estate near Croft, 1828 (torn), a plan on vellum of property near Derby, and other material. See illustration on proceding page.
