SHELLEY AND ROMANTIC VERSE

Verse miscellany in two (of five) volumes, with half-tiles, “A Collection of Poems &c by Mr John Grosse 1822” and “A Collection of Poems by Mr John Grosse 1824”, transcribed throughout in a small neat calligraphic hand, comprising a wide range of romantic period verse, especially in the second volume, by Shelley (“Stanzas Written in Dejection, Near Naples by the late Percy Byshe [sic] Shelley”, plus “Time” and “Good Night” both subscribed as from “from Shelley’s Poems”), Byron (represented in both volumes, with a number of memorial verses in the second), Alaric Watts, Bernard Barton, Felicia Hemans, W.L. Bowles, Thomas Moore, Reginald Heber, James Montgomery, and others; both with a gift inscription to William H. Dunsford “From His Affectionate Mother by whose Father This Collection was Compiled”; evidently volumes 3 and 5 of, presumably, an annual sequence, several hundred pages each, first rebound, covers of second loose, 8vo, 1822 and 1824

Footnotes

These volumes appear to have been kept chronologically, with a fair number of memorial verses prompted by Byron's death cropping up at the beginning of the second volume for 1824 (such as "A Thought Suggested by the Death of Lord Byron", "Stanzas on the Death of Lord Byron", "On the Death of Lord Byron"); while a reference, also in the second, to "Reginald the present Bishop of Calcutta" (i.e. Reginald Heber, appointed 1823, died 1826) confirms that they were, indeed, written in the early 1820s, as stated.
