BURNEY (FANNY)

Autograph letter in the third person, as Madame d'Arblay, to Lady Anne Hamilton, requesting "that her Ladyship will have the goodness to express her deep sense of the graciousness of Her Royal Highness, & her very great mortification that the state of her health puts it wholly out of her power to avail herself of the [con]descendsion of Her Royal Highness [of] the dinner at Kensington Palace", one page, small tear at lower left-hand corner, 8vo, Chelsea College, "Septr 21st" [?1813]

Footnotes

Lady Anne Hamilton was appointed Lady of the Bedchamber to the Princess of Wales in 1814. However the Princess fled Britain on 8 August that year, and did not return until Queen, so one can only hazard a guess that it predates her official appointment. Lady Anne – described by Creevey as 'full six feet high' and bearing 'a striking resemblance to one of Lord Derby's great red deer' – was to remain extraordinarily loyal to Caroline in her later vicissitudes. The invitation may not have appealed greatly to Fanny Burney, whose diaries have left a vivid record of the tedium suffered by ladies-in-waiting at the court of Caroline's mother-in-law, Queen Charlotte.
