BURGHLEY and Sir EDWARD HOBY

Autograph minute signed by William Cecil, Lord Burghley ("W. Burghley"), written on an address leaf directed to him as Lord High Treasurer of England, docketed as originally attached to a petition from a "Mr Hylliard" to appoint a day of hearing in a legal case; Burghley's minute reading: "Mr Fanshaw to appoynt a daye of hearing, som tyme the next terme"; the address leaf detached and the petition lacking, one page, folio, seal and tear where opened, other dockets, some dust-staining and other signs of wear, 20 May 1596; together with a letter signed by Burghley's nephew, the parliamentarian, scholar and collector Sir Edward Hoby ("Edw Hoby"), to Burghley's son and successor Robert Cecil, Lord Salisbury ("My very good Lo"), complaining that the letters patent by which James I granted him the tithes of Rochester Cathedral have been incorrectly made out and asking the Attorney General (Sir Edward Coke) to intervene and "by a newe bill mend the errors of my former graunt", one page, minor repair, remains of guard, folio, Blackfriars, 16 November [1605] (2)
