ART – HOLMAN HUNT and ILLUSTRATORS OF THE 1860S

Album of original drawings, engravings, related letters and cheques compiled by the illustrator Henry Fitzcook (or Fitz-Cook), comprising a group of his highly-finished designs in pen-and-ink for Poems in Pen & Pencil (for the title, introductory sonnet and an incomplete set of five verse designs, one dated at the end 12 August 1846), with his pencil sketch for ‘The Return of Enoch Arden’; with an incomplete set of engraved illustrations for Isaac Watts’s Divine and Sacred Songs, with manuscript material mounted on the reverse of each, such as letters, receipts and payment cheques, artists represented comprising William Holman Hunt (“...I am working closely at the little picture of the girl praying and I hope to have it sufficiently finished to be able to do the drawing from it before the end of the week..."; plus cheque made out to him), Hablot K. Browne ‘Phiz’, Marcus Stone, Thomas Morten (a striking design anticipating Beardsley’s late style, with the note “T. Morten committed suicide shortly after etching this Design”), Florence Caxton, J.D. Watson, C. Green and William Cave Thomas, some dust-staining, in the remains of a folder, 4to, mostly 1865-1866

Footnotes

The main run of these plates, with related material, were prepared for Divine and moral songs for children. By Isaac Watts, D.D. Illustrated in the new graphotype engraving process by W. Holman Hunt, W. Cave Thomas, J.D. Watson, G. du Maurier, T. Morten, C. Green, H.K. Brown, Marcus Stone, H. Anelay, Florence Claxton, M.E. Edwards, etc. etc. under the superintendence of H. Fitzcook, published by James Nisbet & Co., London, in about 1867. Holman Hunt's design 'A Morning Song' was based on, although by no means identical to, his well-known painting, The Morning Prayer of 1866, which he had undertaken following Fitzcook's commission (in the painting the maiden is shown kneeling by her bed with a handbag hanging from a chair in the foreground, striking a distinctly worldly even carnal note, while in our engraving she kneels on the bed with the chair in the background); a study that 'explore[s] the effects on young women of contemporary sexual morality' (Judith Bronkhurst, ODNB). We have found no evidence in Copac of publication of Fitzcook's Poems in Pen & Pencil.
