ART - HOLMAN HUNT

File relating to Holman Hunt's transactions with the man of letters Sir Israel Gollancz, principally concerning his memoirs Pre-Raphaelitism and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (1905), for which Gollancz acted as literary adviser, including four letters signed, written in 1904, about the book, discussing last-minute additions ("...At last the book is tied up and ready to go by special messenger to you. I hope the size wont be alarming. Of course in the night I have thought of a few points... but I would not open the parcel to consider the questionable weaknesses. Some might on examination, not be worth the change. There is however the report of a chant which I heard some girls at Nazareth singing which only roughly expresses the meaning..."), apologising for causing him so much trouble ("...but I am often now reminded of quickly advancing weakness & am often possessed with fear that after all the long delayed book may not be brought out in my lifetime..."), expressing his misgivings in having Steel as an editor ("...the Athenaeum for which he now writes is a paper which in the beginning of the PRB struggle was most inimical to us, & was cruelly injurious for many years...") and giving vent to his dislike of F.G. Stevens ("...who called himself one of our original members and who, as such, dispersed information about us which was almost always incorrect..."); together with a printed circular signed, a group of letters and card to Gollancz by Edith Holman Hunt, photographs and other material
