WOOLF (VIRGINIA)

Autograph letter signed ("Virginia Woolf"), to Mrs Clifford, sending "with my love a little book of my father's which we have just brought out, thinking you may like to have it. I only wish it were nicer to look at, but owing to our going away, the printers have made it look rather cheap & nasty I'm afraid. But I like the book itself, & I think you may too", one page, headed paper, small repair to blank margin, a few brown spots, in very good condition, 4to, Tavistock Square, [c. May 1924]

Footnotes

Sir Leslie Stephen's Some Early Impressions was published by the Hogarth Press in May 1924 and comprises reminiscences originally printed in The National Review and The Atlantic Monthly in 1903. Lucy Clifford, the letter's recipient, had been a friend of Virginia's father and was the widow of a mathematician who had died young of consumption, forcing her thereafter to make a living as a popular novelist (and earning several disparaging references in Virginia's letters). Our letter is not published in The Letters of Virginia Woolf, edited by Nigel Nicolson and Joanne Trautmann (1975-1980).
