WILLIAMS (CHARLES)

Series of seven typed letters signed (four with initials), to the author, feminist and peace-campaigner Ursula Roberts ('Susan Miles'), written from wartime Inklings Oxford in his capacity as reader for the Oxford University Press, about her novel in verse and prose Rabboni ("...I think in many ways it is very fine indeed. Here and there it seems to me that the prose is a little over-mannered... And I am not at all sure that the second part is not too long for the peculiarly effective but peculiarly monotonous verse form..."), 8 pages, on headed OUP paper, one letter annotated by Roberts, minor wear, splits at folds and marginal tears, 4to and 8vo, Oxford University Press, 5 February 1934 and 8 April 1940 to 28 October 1942

Footnotes

A copy of Rabboni, published by Andrew Dakers in 1942, is included in the lot. Ursula Roberts's incoming correspondence between c.1910 and 1960 is held by Stanford University, Department of Special Collections and University Archives Manuscripts Division (M0908). Her verse novel Lettice Delmer (1958) was republished by Persephone Books in 2002. We can find no record of any letters or manuscript by Charles Williams, 'Inkling' and friend of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, having been sold at auction.

Saleroom notices

Please note that a copy of 'Rabbonni' is not included in the lot.
