BRONTËS' YORKSHIRE

Poetical notebook of Laura Wilson Barker of Thirkleby, with her ownership inscription: "Laura Wilson Barker, Sep. 1852", comprising fair copies of some 75 poems written in her neat hand, dated between 1846 and 1854, written mostly at Thirkleby, but also York, Ambleside, Keswick, London and elsewhere; titles of poems including 'The dejected husbandman', 'Song of the Violet', 'Lament (To the river Lodore in the Glen of Watendlath)', 'Lines addressed by his tutor to J.G.E. on his leaving Cambridge', 'A Valentine to Miss E.J.', 'Reveillée (Written & set to music for the Apollo Glee Society of Sheffield)', 'Anthem for our Heroes' (written the month Tennyson's 'Charge of the Light Brigade' was printed). 'Lines on G— W—' (opening "My love is tall, and fresh, & fair", dated 18 May 1845, and followed immediately by 'To G— W— on his marriage', beginning "Farewell Georgie, farewell dearest"); the poems interspersed with observations on scenery and weather ("...Christmas day (bitter cold) Mond eveng Thirkleby – 1848... Grisedale Bridge – Patterdale Nov 15 1851 (owls hooting – fall of snow)... Dec 1 (severe frost) 1851', 'Beech Cottage, Ambleside. Dec 19 1851. frid. aftern. Footnotes

The compiler of this attractive volume appears to have been a young lady of good education and to have been employed as governess or tutor at Thirkleby in Yorkshire. Michael Silverman characterised the verse as 'Inoffensive rhyming verse, of the period, written by an educated young lady, with much talk of love & nature'.
