TENNYSON (ALFRED, Lord)

Presentation copy of his play Harold, with his autograph inscription on the title-page in English and Hebrew (the latter in block letters): "William Warburton from A. Tennyson/ Re'ehu verov hayamim/ very awkwardly written!", first edition, publisher's green cloth, hinges cracked and small area of damage to front free endpaper, spine and covers worn, preserved in a drop-back box, leather label, 8vo, Henry S. King, 1877

Footnotes

AN INSCRIPTION BY TENNYSON IN HEBREW: being to his teacher the Rev William Parsons Warburton, and reading 'His friend in many days'. Tennyson had been receiving lessons from Warburton from 1868 with a view to making a new translation, possibly metrical, of the Book of Job (see Tennyson: A Memoir by His Son, 1897, ii, pp. 50-53).This did not come to pass, but he was an assiduous student of the language, which gave him much pleasure. Harold, Tennyson's second play, was published in December 1876.
