Typed letter signed ("Ezra Pound"), to the editor or literary editor of the New York World, remarking with regard to his new periodical: "Re/ your announcement in issue of 27th Dec a slight error, and if any 'cry' a silent one; perhaps you wd do better not to present me as howling, leaping or otherwise emphasizing my presence. What I said was that I would edit a magazine IF, after reasonable enquiry, I found enough authors, or items, rejected by, or obviously unsuitable for publication in; already extant periodicals. I offered to look over mss that had been rejected by editors of The Criterion, Dial, New Masses, The American Mercury, and Poetry; or obviously would be rejected by these editors, for some reason other than inherent dullness or mediocrity"; with autograph subscription and characteristic bold deletions, one page, text at upper margin repaired, paper-clip stain, Rapallo, 12 January 1927

While Pound had made editorial contributions, not acknowledged on the masthead, to many literary magazines of the day, The Exile was the first of which he was named as editor, and therefore marked the fulfilment of an ambition. The first Spring Number went to press that month, with a special separate broadside issue also being printed devoted to part of Canto XX, set out as prose, in order to secure copyright in the United States (which was not granted by the authorities as this issue was deemed neither a book nor a periodical). The Exile as such only ran for four issues, and folded in the autumn of 1928.

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
