NEWTON - MEMORIAL MEDAL

Portrait medal of Sir Isaac Newton, in bronze, by John Croker, with the bust of Newton on the obverse, with hair short, open collar and mantle round his shoulders, facing left, signed 'I.C.'; Science on the reverse, with wings on her head, seated, leaning on a table and holding a diagram of the solar system, with the legend 'Felix. Cognoscere. Causas' ('Happy in the Knowledge of Causes' from Virgil, Georgics, ii.490), dated in the Old Style MDCCXXVI (for 1726/7), in a fitted Victorian case, a few minor abrasions, but with good colour and patination, 52mm., [Tower of London, 1731]
