Footnotes

A FINE WORKING MANUSCRIPT, written in the Outer Hebrides: Compton Mackenzie's biography of the Czech statesman Edvard Benes traces his life from birth to the infamous Munich Agreement of 1938. In a note, Mackenzie recorded that "This book was inspired by many long talks I enjoyed with Dr. Benes during the spring and early summer of 1944, and it was written immediately afterwards". It was published in 1946 with a transcript of their conversations and an epilogue added (pp. 261-338, 339-340). See illustration on preceding page.
