JOYCE (JAMES)

Autograph letter signed ("James Joyce"), to Jessie Rittenhouse, thanking her for including his verses in her lectures and anthology, and having pleasure in confirming the permission given by Huebsch, his American agent ("...No other formality is necessary..."); with autograph envelope, redirected in another hand from New York to California, one page, short splits at folds neatly repaired, Paris, 28 October 1923

Footnotes

The recipient was founder of the Poetry Society of America and champion of contemporary poets, including Pound, Eliot and Frost. She edited two anthologies of modern American verse as well as the one Joyce is here referring to, The Little Book of Modern British Verse: One Hundred Poets Since Henley (1924), where 'Oh Sweetheart, hear you' from Chamber Music is printed. When he wrote this letter, Joyce had of course moved far beyond his earlier essays in verse and, with Ulysses already behind him, was already deep into Finnegans Wake. It appears to be unpublished.
