Footnotes

The third Blue Funnel Line steamer to be christened Teucer was one of six sisters ordered in 1905 whose construction was shared between three shipyards. Teucer was built by Hawthorn, Leslie on the Tyne at Newcastle and completed in 1906. Registered at 9,017 tons gross (5,805 net) and measuring 485 feet in length with a 58 foot beam, she proved the fastest of the group and easily achieved her designed cruising speed of 14 knots. This proved particularly useful when, in December 1915, she outran a surfaced U-boat in the Mediterranean and made port safely when many a similar cargo vessel might have fallen victim to the submarine. After a long career of reliable service, including surviving the perils of both World Wars, carrying a wide variety of general cargoes all over the world, Teucer was finally withdrawn at the end of 1947 and scrapped early the following year.
