Footnotes

The SS Canberra was built for P&O by Harland & Wolfe in Belfast and launched in 1960. Originally intended for the UK to Australia passenger trade, she was converted for cruising in 1974, when cheaper and efficient air travel undecut the market. A successful cruise liner, she was requisitioned in 1982 by the Admiralty and was sent to the Falklands as a troopship, where she was nicknamed "The Great White Whale". Refitted for cruising after the war, she remained very popular with the public until rising costs forced her disposal in 1997.
