Footnotes

Watercraft were one of the principal means of transport in London until the 19th century. The City of London Livery companies often used barges, large oared vessels, for official and ceremonial purposes on the river. They were generally hired, but from around the 1650's special decorative vessels were commissioned. The City Barge was the official watercraft for the Lord Mayor and it's principle function was to carry the Lord Mayor on his annual procession by river to Westminster to take the loyal oath. This model represents the last City Barge to be built in 1807. The water procession ceased in 1856, driven from the river by increasing congestion and was replaced by the annual land parade. The now redundant barge was sold by auction for £65 four years later.
