Footnotes

Built in Liverpool in 1846 for the P & O's Suez-to-Calcutta service, Haddington was launched as a twin-funnelled, two-masted paddle steamer. After eight years in service, she was converted to a three-masted barque, and put to work supplying P & O's bases in the East. Also serving as a training ship, she was sold in 1871, and after numerous changes of ownership, caught fire at sea and was wrecked in 1888.
