A collection of Merchant Seaman's personal logbooks and memorabilia, Lionel Greenstreet (1889-1979)

comprising; the official logbook kept on board the sailing ship Auldgirth April 1905-October 1907, whilst an apprentice and covering voyages to British Columbia, Chile, and Australia, and subsequently on the SS Winifredian and SS Ingeli 1908, and the SV Combermere 1909. Together with his personal logbooks for his tme on board the Auldgirth, the mounted brass bell from the ship and a photograph on board. With some later correspondance.
together with a small collection of personal logbooks from his father, Herbert Edward Greenstreet (latterly Commodore of the New Zealand Shipping co.)during the period 1871-75. (6)

Lionel Greenstreet RN followed his father's career at sea, joining the cadet ship Worcester at the age of 15 and passing out from there in 1904. He was finishing his time as trainee officer on board the Auldgirth. He gained his Master's certificate in 1911. In 1914 he applied successfully for the position of First Officer on SY Endurance for Shackleton's voyage of exploration to the Antarctic. Commissioned into the RNR in 1917, he joined Furness Withy when the war ended, only to join up again in 1940, serving in the North Atlantic and North Sea, before returning to Furness Withy in peacetime. He was the longest survivor of the Shackleton expedition when he died in 1979.

Captain Herbert Edward Greenstreet (born 1851)also started his maritime career as a Worcester boy, finally taking his first command with the New Zealand Shiping company in 1876.
