A Regency footman's / militia hat

Constructed of patent leather, with leather and hessian sweatband, with engraved gilt brass engraved with the title 'Sub Spe' chained ducal coronets above an open hand, each badge with four attachment lugs.

Footnotes

By family repute the following two hats were part of the uniform of a militia founded by Sir James Dunbar. While no direct evidence of a Boath House militia is recorded, leading to the inference that they could equally be footman's hats, there may have been a duality of role.
