A Victorian Naval Officer's Sword

71m blade by 'Dudley Grand Parade Portsmouth' and the opposite side 'Warranted' etched with scrolling foliage and fouled anchor, regulation gilt hilt with folding guard incorporating a crowned anchor, lion's head pommel, wire bound fish skin grip, in its brass mounted leather scabbard.

Footnotes

The following four lots were formerly the property of the Dunbar family of Boath House, Nairn. Having served in the Royal Navy and been mentioned in correspondence between Nelson and Collingwood, Sir James Dunbar returned to Boath House as its 9th Laird and first Baron. He commisioned Archibald Simpson of Aberdeen to design the current sandstone house in the classical style, on the site of the 16th century manor house. The leather hats and the silk train relate to Sir James Dunbar, while the Naval dress sword is likely to have belonged to his son who followed his father as an officer in the Royal Navy.

The engraved coat of arms are those of Sir James Dunbar. Sir James was a captain in the Royal Navy and the unusual design of the hats are likely to have been inspired by a naval bicorn hat.
