John Sanderson was listed in The Scottish Book Trade Index as an engraver in 1824-1825, then as a lapidary and mineral dealer based in St Andrew Square 1826-37. The firm becomes John Sanderson & Son in 1838 with the additional role of seal engravers. They operated from 15 George Street between 1852-1863 when they relocated to 92 Princes Street, staying there until 1879 and placing this piece within those years. In 1880 they moved for the final time to 96 Princes Street.
