Footnotes

Sir Harry Lauder (1870-1950) famed for songs such as "Roamin' in the Gloamin'" was renowned for the philosophy on life that "Aye, I'm tellin' ye, happiness is one of the few things in this world that doubles every time you share it with someone else."

As well as touring England, Canada and the United States Lauder entertained the troops of World War I at the front line, later establishing the Harry Lauder Million Pound Fund for maimed men (one scheme to raise funds was a short film by Charlie Chaplin; which never came to fruition).

As a result of his contribution to the war effort Lauder was made a Knight of the British Empire in 1919.
