PROVENANCE:

Thence by descent.
LITERATURE:
Andrew Gibbon Williams, Craigie: The Art of Craigie Aitchison, Canongate Books Ltd, Edinburgh, 1996, pl. 119, pp. 164 and 172
This painting from the early 1970s is reminiscent of the composition, mood and tonality in the Landscape from inside a Cathedral of 1957 (Williams, op cit, pl. 10, p. 41). During 1955 Aitchison won an Italian Government scholarship to travel for two and a half months from Rome and the Campagna through Umbria and Tuscany to Venice. A number of his paintings created after that visit were imbued with the contemplative spirit of the central Italian landscape.
