EXHIBITED:
Glasgow, Messrs Davidson, 1913
LITERATURE:
J.L. Caw, William McTaggart, - A Biography and an Appreciation, James Maclehose & Sons, Glasgow, 1917, p. 247
McTaggart was the consummate sea painter, and the summer of 1881 found him working at Carnoustie and Crail. These coastal pictures appear to have been painted as much for pleasure as anything else, and McTaggart's Argyll heritage imbues these with an almost spiritual quality. This was painted around the time of the superlative The Wave (Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery).
