With Duncan R. Miller Fine Arts, London
This characteristic and rare 'Glasgow School' picture of the peak period displays the squared brushwork, light effects and sense of design which underpin their most pioneering work. Closely related to Henry's Audrey (Phillips, The Scottish Sale, Edinburgh, 25-26 August 2000, lot 835) it may also allude to Galloway folklore. While the form of the seated figure is inspired by Bastien-Lepage's Les Foins, the subject may have derived from Arthur Melville's monumental Audrey and Her Goats, begun in 1884 when the artists were together at Cockburnspath.
