In many respects this picture encapsulates William McTaggart's art. Three girls play on the shore at Machrihanish, an idyllic scene which the artist would have regularly witnessed with his own large family. The figures are finely resolved but still typically diaphanous, suggesting human life in harmony with its surroundings and yet fleeting in the context of timeless nature. The handling is typically free and painterly, with running surf and touches of colour.
The study for this painting (14 x 19 in.), signed and dated 1904, formed part of the noted Thomas Godfrey Kirkness collection of William McTaggart paintings.
