PROVENANCE:
Sale; Sotheby's, Gleneagles, August 28 1984, lot 1096
Painted on the banks of the Kelvin in the west end of Glasgow, near the Fergussons' home in Clouston Street. The couple had moved to Glasgow in 1939, in part due to the success of Margaret's dance school, but Fergusson also felt it to be the most 'Highland' and 'Celtic' city and he wished to inspire progressive talent and promote the Celtic Revival. The New Art Club was formed and the city welcomed an influx of influential figures such as Jankel Adler and Josef Herman. He also formed a deep friendship with Hugh MacDiarmid.
