PROVENANCE:
With James McClure and Son, Glasgow
Sale; Edmiston's, Glasgow, purchased circa 1969
Thence by descent.
Painted circa 1920, Peploe's concerns here are as much shape and balance as colour. The spherical melon sits slightly off-centre, while cropped pink blooms are thrown in relief against a green drape. The corner of the blue table is dramatic and angular, while the band behind the cup is in orange, its opposite colour. Planes of primary colour compete with black and green to frame a white arrowhead in the centre. The design is calculated and visually arresting.
The still life of teapot and fruit verso was painted circa 1913, and relates to experimental transitional pictures such as Still life (Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art).
