Cadell acquired his studio in George St., Edinburgh, in 1909, and the first exhibition of the progressive Society of Eight (featuring John Lavery, PW Adam and James Paterson among others disillusioned with the R.S.A.) was held in 1912. Studio interiors were becoming Cadell's key theme, and his love of fine objects is clear as he constructed an environment which reflected his own tastes and the social milieu in which he moved. A black polished floor enhanced the rich effect, and pure colour emerges from the pale white and mauve colour scheme.
