PROVENANCE:
Purchased from Margaret Morris by FKB Murdoch, Edinburgh, circa 1977.
EXHIBITED:
London, Bailie Gallery, Some Modern Painters, 1908 no. 39
Glasgow and various venues, Scottish Arts Council, JD Fergusson Memorial Exhibition, 1961-62, no. 19
The sitter is probably Fergusson's sister, painted in Edinburgh circa 1907, and the handling, particularly around the hands and still life, betrays the close dialogue with Peploe at that stage. His touch is fluid and spontaneous, and the subject works well on a small scale.
