A label verso bears the inscription 'Iona & Mull/by Mr. F.C.B. Cadell (1932)'.
Tom Honeyman, author of Three Scottish Colourists (Faber, London, 1950) and the man who coined the term, considered Cadell's Iona pictures to be the archetypal 'Colourist' works. The artist visited the island almost every summer from 1912, particularly attracted by the pinky-white sand, jagged rocks and blue sea. The fleeting light and atmospheric effects were a great challenge to Cadell and Peploe when working en plein air, and they both much preferred 'Scottish weather' to full sunshine.
