AGRIPPA (HENRICUS CORNELIUS)

De occulta philosophia libri tres, title with woodcut vignette portrait, numerous woodcut illustrations historiated initials and tables, occasional moderate dampstaining, title soiled and torn with small loss to woodcut and a few letters on verso, foremargin of first 5 leaves reinforced, later half calf, rubbed, folio, [Cologne, Johannes Soter?], July 1533

Footnotes

The German theologian, astrologer and alchemist Agrippa was frequently declared to be a heretic and blasphemer due to his belief that the occult sciences were not demonic, but could be united with Christianity. This, his most important work, complete with woodcuts recalling Dürer's Meloncolia, sets out his opinions in full and greatly influenced later occult writers such as Giordano Bruno and John Dee. See illustration overleaf.
