An Unusual Dagger
The Hilt English, Late 17th Century, The Blade French, 18th Century

The blade (some pitting) adapted from a hunting sword, double-edged at the point, and etched along each side with foliated strapwork, a standing figure beside a brazier with two hearts, a crown and baldachin above, a portrait bust on a pedestal, and the inscription 'Ses Chastes Liens d'armour', hilt comprising iron ferrule and pommel-cap chased en suite with the blade, and tapering ivory grip of circular section inlaid in silver wire on both sides with an armoured figured holding a sword, each figure between scrolling foliage, the details picked out in red pigment
