A Continental Sword Commemorating Lieutenant-General David-Hendrikius Bruce
19th Century

With broad double-edge blade (some rust patination) tapering towards the triangular point and blued over half its length on each side at the forte, one side etched 'Bruce David, Général de Brigade. 1811.' with a gilt crowned Napoleonic 'N' framed by a laurel wreath on either side, and on the other 'Offert par ses soldats et ses officers Hollandais de naissance Français de coeur' with a gilt Imperial eagle framed by a laurel wreath either side, neoclassical cast and chased ormolu-mounted hilt comprising coffin-shaped langets each with the standing figure of a Classical warrior between foliage, within a border of dots and against a punched ground, recurved quillons of circular section, one with ram's head terminal, the other formed as a monster's head with a serpent in its mouth, grip-straps with running foliage, curved pommel with a panel of foliage on each side and finial formed in the round as a classical helmeted warrior's head, and flat ivory grip-scales (damaged), in original wooden scabbard covered in brown leather (incomplete) with ormolu locket and chape each embossed and chased with neoclassical ornament, the former with shield-shaped frog-hook en suite (some wear to gilding)

Footnotes

David-Hendrikius Bruce was born in Coeverden in the Netherlands in 1755. He joined the Dutch army in 1782 and served in the Army of Batavia. He saw service in Europe from 1805 and from 1809 to 1811 served in the Army of Brabant. In 1811 he moved to the French service and served in Portugal. He was at Salamanca, Burgos and Venta-del-Pozo as a Brigadier General. He returned from French service in 1813 and rejoined the Dutch army in 1814 as Lieutenant-General. He was made Commander of the Legion of Honour in 1813 and was a holder of the Netherlands Military Order of William. He died in Utrecht in 1828
