A Scottish Silver-Mounted Dress Dirk And Powder-Flask
Edinburgh Silver Hallmarks, Maker's Mark PW, Mid-19th Century

The first with bright blade fullered and notched along the back over half its length, shouldered swelling rootwood grip carved with Celtic interlace, engraved silver basal mount, and crown-shaped pommel set with a faceted imitation cairngorm, in original wood-lined scabbard covered in black leather with pierced silver mounts engraved with symmetrical scrolling foliage, locket with bar for suspension, and the by-knife and fork en suite with the dirk; the second with cowhorn body of curved flattened form set on one side with a faceted imitation cairngorm in a silver mount pierced and engraved with scrollwork, mounts comprising domed base-mount engraved with scrolling foliage against a hatched ground and set with a large imitation cairngorm, nozzle with pierced border, engraved en suite and with unusual threaded silver stopper formed as a dog's head whistle, a ring in its mouth, a further mount formed as an eagle's claw set with a cairngorm, and silver chain for suspension (2)
