A Rare German Halberd
Late 16th Century, Probably Nuremberg

The head with medial ridge extending to the point of the leaf-shaped blade on both sides, a pair of small hooked projections beneath, sharply pointed crescentic axe-blade and beak-shaped fluke each with short hooked projection above and below, faceted tapering socket (hole on one side), and shortened side-straps, the head etched overall on both sides with scrolling foliage inhabited by exotic birds including an ostrich, all against a dotted blackened ground, on later wooden staff of circular section
