An Indian Firangi
18th Century

With earlier bright European fullered blade double-edged towards the point and punched with Hindi inscriptions on both sides at the forte, the back of the blade punched and incised with further Hindi inscriptions, characteristic silver-plated hilt retaining traces of gilding and comprising raised plate with foliate finial extending over the forte on each side, waisted upbent guard with raised border, curved tapering knuckle-guard en suite, slightly domed saucer-shaped pommel filled with jingles and with stalk-like finial (incomplete), and slightly swelling grip of flattened diamond section (hilt with some loss of silvering and pitting overall)
