A Singhalese Silver-Gilt Mounted Kastana
19th Century Or Earlier

With curved single-edged blade (rust patinated) with slender fuller along the back on each side, the forte covered with a silver sleeve chased with a trellised design along each side, heavy hilt comprising knuckle-guard and downturned quillons each with dragon's head terminal, one with a foliate tongue, the former slightly hollowed on the inside and cast and chased with foliage on the outside, large dragon-head pommel with faceted red glass eyes (one replaced) and bared teeth (tongue missing), and decorated overall with cast and chased designs of foliate scrollwork, in original wood-lined scabbard (minor damage) embossed and chased with a differing design of foliage against a finely punched ground along each side, chape with monster-head terminal, a bud with button finial in its jaws, four fixed rings for suspension, and some original gilding
