The First 11th Century, The Remainder 15th To 19th Century
The first of iron, with slender heel-band of triangular section with small flattened figure-eight terminal for leathers on one side, neck of diamond section, and deeply fluted six-sided pyramidal-shaped goad; the second in excavated condition, with broad downcurved heel-band with crest, and straight tapering neck (rowel missing); the third of similar form and in similar condition, with slender heel-band and figure-eight terminals, and straight tapering neck; the fourth with chiselled heel-band, and tapering neck downbent towards the rowel (missing); the fifth of slender form with short neck (rowel missing); the sixth of brass, with tapering heel-band with pair of button terminals for leathers, one retaining the original iron buckle, and with short sharply-pointed goad; the seventh, probably English, of brass with slightly downcurved heel-band of flattened triangular section with figure-eight terminals, short crane-neck (rowel missing), and with punched decoration overall retaining very faint traces of original gilding; another three of similar form and in excavated condition (incomplete, rowels missing); and a gilt-brass ceremonial or dress-spur cast with roses, thistles and shamrocks (11)
