Footnotes

Having raised the suspicion of the authorities due to the political slant of much of his work, Dumile left Johannesburg for London in 1968, and was never to return to South Africa. In London he befriended many other exiled South Africans, including several members of the ANC and despite a very modest income, he donated much of the proceeds from the sale of his work to the ANC.

It is obvious among the works in the present lot that thoughts of home and the struggle were never far from his mind. One drawing was executed on the reverse of a brown paper envelope addressed to the ANC in London, and others are inscribed variably "South Africa shall be free" and "we blacks from S.A. are not afraid".
