Footnotes
"Emptiness and its silence are in another sense a condition of man's life everywhere, and it may be that this is why so many of Maud Sumner's later paintings have emptied themselves of the direct human element and concern themselves with a few symbols which have a human, but also a religious, nature: the great glowing moons, the huge burning suns, the stars: the immense depths of sky and stratosphere; earth and water. These are the elementals which mankind has always used, or pondered upon, and which to him have always been symbols - religious symbols in the ages of faith, scientific symbols in our age of religious scepticism."
