The tree tulip is otherwise know as the Japanese magnolia (Magnolia liliiflora). Magnolias were a much favoured subject of the artist and she included them in many of her still lifes throughout her career.
In his review for the Cape Times of 31st March 1956 Matthys Bokhorst commented on the above work:
"Three works in this show I should like to mention especially...secondly a noble still life, 'Tree Tulips' (20) in delicate colours and such a light play of the twigs that reminds one of the Japanese."
