Footnotes

Higgs studied art at the Grahamstown School of Art in 1919 before moving to London, where she continued her studies at Byam Shaw School of Art and Goldsmiths' College before moving on to the Royal Academy in 1926, where she studied under Walter Sickert, and the London Art School in 1931. While in London, she exhibited with both the London Group and the New English Art Club. She subsequently studied at the Grande Chaumière in Paris, under André Lhote, before returning to South Africa in 1933. The present lot, a rare early work, dates to the 1930s, before her unique painterly style had fully formed.
