Footnotes

PROVENANCE:
Collection of Norman Musgrave Eaton (1902-1966), Pretoria, circa 1949

The present lot serves as an important indicator of Pierneef's technique and approach to landscape painting. It is unusual in the artist's oeuvre in that it is painted in much broader, looser gestures than one normally sees in his more "finished" works, where the paint is evenly applied with little expression in his brushwork, suggesting it may be an oil study completed en plein air rather than from preliminary drawings that were later filled out in colour in his studio. His attempt to capture the precise lighting conditions and atmosphere of the landscape at this time of day are evident.
