PROVENANCE:
Acquired directly from the artist by the current owner
The current owner was the proprietor of 'Le Rubens' bistro, Rue Mazarine, Paris. Gerard Sekoto was a regular at this establishment and befriended the owner, who then purchased a number of works over the following years.
Sekoto visited Senegal in 1966-67 and was entranced by the country:
"My looser and freer lines were aroused during my stay in Senegal...the slow, elegant movement of the people was mostly fairylike to me."
"These are real examples of Senegal women - stately, aristocratic, slender and tall. They walk as though they have no concern at all with their surrounding, yet going on their way to somewhere. This is already being felt from youth. The little girls have by nature that way of being relaxed in the gestures of their limbs, so graceful without even being aware of it." (the artist, as quoted in Lindop, 1988)
