PROVENANCE:
Purchased from the Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg, by the current owner

EXHIBITED:
Johannesburg, Goodman Gallery, Walter Battiss and Norman Catherine, 'The Fook Island Exhibition', circa 1975-1976

Soon after his first exhibition, Catherine collaborated closely with his mentor Walter Battiss on his Fook Island concept from 1973. This project involved the building of Fook Manor at Hartebeespoort Dam, designing murals and merchandising. They created a Fookian language with its own alphabet, a map, imaginary people, plants, animals (as seen in the present lot), a history as well as a set of postage stamps, currency, passports and driver's licences for this "island of the imagination".
