The S.S. Madison was built at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. in Newport News, Virginia in 1911. She was owned by the Old Dominion Steamship Company, and had principal dimensions of 353.3 ft. LOA x 42.1 ft. beam x 16.8 ft. draft and weighed 3,734 tons.
